Bootlegging Women: Mary Gill and Laura Wimbush In-Person
This talk compares the lives of two women who were married to notorious bootleggers in the Prohibition Era. Mary Gill, of West Beaver Township, Snyder County, and Laura Wimbush, of Campbell County, Virginia, both came into the spotlight when their husbands’ whiskey operations were raided by police. Their trajectories show what everyday life was like for rural women in the 1920s and how the illegal booze trade intersected with “back mountain” ways of living.
